Local Services Ads vs Google Search Ads for plumbers

Last updated July 30, 2026

Should a plumber use Google Local Services Ads or regular Google Search Ads?

Run both if you can. Local Services Ads sit above everything else on the page, charge per lead rather than per click at around $57 for plumbing, and carry the Google Guaranteed badge — but they require license and insurance verification, and you compete largely on review count and response rate. Search ads give you control over exactly which searches you appear for and let you keep a campaign running when your LSA reviews are thin. They answer different problems.

LSA cost per lead from SearchLight Digital's stated dataset of 230 accounts and $2.03M in spend; click costs from PPC Chief ($8.45) and LocaliQ ($10.49); search cost per lead spans PPC Chief ($74.58) to SearchLight non-branded ($183). The ranking-factor and setup rows describe each product as Google documents it — those are not cost claims and are not sourced below.

The case for Local Services Ads

The economics are genuinely attractive. You pay per lead, not per click, which means the tire-kicker who clicks and leaves costs you nothing. SearchLight's dataset puts plumbing LSA leads around $57 with a 44.5% book rate and an average ticket near $1,714 — which, if your work matches that profile, is very hard to argue with. That ticket figure is well above the $150 to $500 range published for plumbing service calls generally, so read it as a statement about the kind of job this channel tends to send rather than a promise about yours.

You also get the green Google Guaranteed badge and top-of-page placement above every paid and organic result. For a homeowner with water on the floor at 11pm, that badge and that position do a lot of work.

The catch is that you compete on reputation signals rather than on strategy. A new shop with four reviews will lose to an established shop with four hundred, and there is no bid you can place to fix that in the short term. LSAs reward the business you already are; Search ads let you punch above it.

The case for Search Ads

Control. You decide precisely which searches you appear for, which you don't, what the ad says, and where the click lands. If you make most of your money on water heater replacements, you can bid hard on water heater searches and ignore everything else. LSAs don't offer that granularity.

Search ads also work when LSAs won't. If your verification is still pending, if your review count is thin, or if you work a service category LSAs handle poorly, Search is what you have. And it is the channel where a negative keyword list, a tight service area, and a well-built landing page can beat a bigger competitor — because those are skill, not scale.

LSAs reward the reputation you already have. Search ads reward how well the campaign is built. If you are the newer, smaller shop, Search is the one where effort still moves the needle.

Running both without wasting money

  • They occupy different slots on the page, so you are not bidding against yourself in any meaningful sense. Appearing twice is generally a feature.
  • Track them separately. Different tracked numbers, or at minimum different reporting. Blending them makes both look mediocre and hides which one is actually paying.
  • Judge each on cost per booked job independently. LSAs frequently win on paper and lose on job quality, or the reverse. You cannot know without measuring.
  • If budget forces a choice: start with LSAs if you have strong reviews and verification is straightforward; start with Search if you are newer, need control, or want calls this week.

One thing to watch on LSAs

Response rate is a ranking factor. Missing calls does not just cost you the job — it costs you position on future leads. If you are going to run LSAs, have a plan for the phone before you turn them on, or you will pay for the privilege of ranking lower over time.

Common questions

Are Local Services Ads cheaper than Google Search Ads for plumbers?

Often, on a per-lead basis. Plumbing LSA leads average around $57 against published search figures of $75 to $183, and LSAs charge per lead rather than per click. But LSAs require license and insurance verification and rank you largely on review count, which limits how much a newer shop can do with them.

Do Local Services Ads appear above regular Google Ads?

Yes. Local Services Ads occupy the top of the results page, above both paid search ads and organic listings.

Can I run Local Services Ads and Search Ads at the same time?

Yes, and most established plumbing shops should. They occupy different positions on the page. Track them with separate phone numbers so you can compare cost per booked job for each rather than blending them.

What do I need to qualify for Google Guaranteed?

License verification, insurance verification, and background checks. The verification process is the main reason LSAs take days to weeks to launch, where a Search campaign can start the same day.

Where these numbers come from

Cost data in home services is almost entirely published by companies selling something. We cite it anyway, because it's the best available — and we label how much each one is worth so you can weigh it yourself.

  • SearchLight Digital — Local Services Ads cost per lead by tradeBased on a stated dataset

Plumbing Local Services Ads: $57 cost per lead, 44.5% book rate, $1,714 average ticket, 6.85x closed return on ad spend — stated as drawn from 230 accounts and $2.03M in spend. Verified against the live page 2026-07-30: all four figures match. Period is February 1–28, 2026 (888 contractors, $6.72M total LSA spend, 126,650 leads); blended all-trade CPL is $53. Note the $71 water-heater figure on this page rests on 2 accounts and the publisher flags it as not statistically robust — do not cite it.

  • SearchLight Digital — Plumbing Google Ads cost per lead benchmarksBased on a stated dataset

Non-branded plumbing search at $183 average cost per lead ($168 median), and plumbing Performance Max at $82. Verified against the live page 2026-07-30: $183 is the Q1 2026 plumbing figure (Jan 1 – Mar 26, 2026; 524 contractors, $14.6M spend, 95,749 leads). The $149 appearing on the same page is HVAC from the January 2026 benchmark, not a refreshed plumbing number — an earlier note in this file mixed the two up. Page last updated April 2026; re-check at the next quarterly refresh.

  • PPC Chief — Average CPC and cost per lead, plumbing servicesOne source, uncorroborated — directional only

Plumbing average cost per click $8.45 (band $6.34–$11.41), average cost per lead $74.58 (band $56–$101), and a conversion rate of 11.3%.

  • LocaliQ — Home Services Search Advertising BenchmarksBased on a stated dataset

Plumbing search benchmarks from LocaliQ's own managed accounts (3,211 home-services campaigns): cost per click $10.49, conversion rate 7.63%, cost per lead $129.02, click-through rate 4.97%. Three caveats the page states and we repeat: the data is titled 2025 benchmarks sampled April 2024 to March 2025, it combines Google and Microsoft Bing rather than Google alone, and its 'averages' are technically medians. The same table shows plumbing mid-table on conversion rate, behind cleaning/maid services (17.65%), window cleaning (13.58%), handyman (13.45%), pools (10.89%), painting (10.80%) and electrical (9.08%).

  • Build-Folio — Plumbing contractor pricing guideOne source, uncorroborated — directional only

Diagnostic service call $75–$150; after-hours emergency call $250–$800+; plumbing service calls averaging $150–$500 overall.
